wikipedia
I donated to wikipedia foundation today. The message I put on their message board for the question: what does wikipedia means to you was the following:
Dear wikipedia (Jimmy Wales),
I have tremendous curiosity for things happening around the world. I know that I can get information about all these things on wikipedia for sure. Hence, I visit your site everyday without fail.
My father laid down the tradition of buying books that help build personality of children. He bought "World Book Encyclopedia" for me and my sister back in 1986 when we were 6 and 3 years respectively for about INR. 10,000 when we purchased our house costing about INR. 1,25,000 i.e. about 8% of cost of residence. This set an excellent example of importance of knowledge in human life.
I have a three year old son. I plan to expose him to wikipedia as soon as he learns to read. I am confident that he will be a learned and sophisticated person if he starts gaining knowledge available in wikipedia from his early childhood. wikipedia is far more than any printed encyclopedia available in market. The strength of wikipedia is its liveliness. It is just hours before information of any event is available. And the cream on the cake is that it is FREE! I had never imagined in my life that such a plethora of knowledge could be available for the whole mankind for free.
Jimmy, you have the blessings of the mankind. God bless you!
Thanks a ton.
Yours,
Shashibhushan Gokhale
PS: I request you to please forward this mail to Mr. Jimmy Wales. I very heartily want to convey my thanks to him.

A welcome customer friendly step by SEBI: SEBI bans ULIP
This is a very very positive step taken by SEBI with common investor's interest in mind. I would like to thank SEBI for the initiative.
I would also like to register my protest against IRDA for taking the side of insurance companies promoting ULIP which is completely against customer interest.
Very good articles have been posted on this on valueresearchonline.com. They are:

I have posted comment on a one-sided article published by Sakal on the issue: http://www.esakal.com/eSakal/20100411/5641531933567981687.htm
I have also communicated by concerns to editor of Sakal since I could not post my message in "vachakancha patravyawhar" due to technical snag in website of Sakal.

How to disable startup of netmeeting at startup
The solution is:
Go to control panel --> Administrative tools> Services> scroll down to Netmeeting remote desktop sharing
Stop the service, go to properties for that service --> another window pops up, use the startup type pulldown window to change it from automatic to manual or disable. Ok, OK.
Might have to reboot.

Rentals in Mumbai
I was shocked to read about the rentals in Mumbai. I am simply numb!!!
The news is located at: http://www.99acres.com/do/Company/propertyheadline?lstAcn=&lstAcnId=&src=PROPRES#144412. Search for "Rentals In Mumbai Rise 30 Pc In A Year" on the webpage. I have quoted the paragraph below for reference:
"Rentals In Mumbai Rise 30 Pc In A Year
With real estate prices reaching the sky, even rentals across Mumbai have been looking skywards, causing heavy strain on those looking for homes. In the last one-year, rentals have increased in the range of 10-30 per cent in Mumbai, directly affecting almost one fourth of city's population that lives in rented houses, mostly in the suburbs. The reason for this hike is large-scale demand along with a huge shortage of rental homes. Presently, the rent of a one-bedroom hall (1BHK) flat measuring 550 square feet at Powai is being quoted in the range of Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000 for a month. A year back, rent for the same apartment was Rs 16,000-20,000 a month. In the same way, monthly rent for a 1BHK flat at Malad is now Rs 18,000, while the same flat was being rented at Rs 15,000 last year. In the Bandra-Santacruz belt, rents being collected are in the range of Rs 30,000 and Rs 45,000 for a 1 BHK, which was previously between Rs 25,000 and Rs 35,000. Mr Ram Prasad Padhi, CEO, Mumbai Propertys, a leading real estate brokerage firm, said that rents correspond inversely to the limited supply. "Many buyers deferred their decision to buy due to the rising property prices. But their number is very large while the houses are limited which led to the hike," said Mr Padhi. 24 March 2010 Hindustan Times"

Can Promises of Highest NAV Guarantee Deliver?
Can Promises of Highest NAV Guarantee Deliver?
Insurance companies have launched a spate of funds promising investors a guarantee of the highest NAV achieved. Can these schemes deliver what they are promising?
Over the last few months, one after another, a number of insurance companies have launched ULIPs which promise to repay the investor on the basis of the highest NAV that the fund has achieved. The pitch is that these funds' NAV effectively does not drop. Once a level is achieved, then the investor is assured of getting at least as much, no matter what happens to the market. It's certainly a very attractive idea. From the way insurance companies are stampeding into launching such products, I'm sure investors must be putting down their money in good numbers-in just a couple of months, six insurance companies have launched such products. Any investor who is told of this concept will immediately start salivating at the thought. Imagine how rich you could have been had you been invested over the last ten years and had been able to lock your investments at the magical value that the markets achieved on the day when the Sensex touched 20,873! more...

Simple timer class in C++
Copied from http://www.dreamincode.net/code/snippet344.htm
/*
Simple timer class
==================
History:
Created - Sarah "Voodoo Doll" White (2006/01/26)
==================
Description:
A quick and easy timer class to save people
from using ad hoc timers. The constructor
begins the timer and the end() member function
stops it, as well as returns the result.
Before starting the timer again with begin(),
users can see the last result with last()...
So unintuitive. ;)
==================
Bugs:
The timing method used is neither strictly
portable, though it only uses standard
functions, nor is it guaranteed to support
timing resolution less than a second.

class Timer {

Time to invest in floating rate funds
Now that inflation has risen to record levels, RBI is sure to take measures to curb it by reducing availability of money in the market. That will be done by hiking various mandatory ratios. This leads to hike in interest rates (benchmark prime lending rates) of banks.
Floating rate debt funds are the funds to purchase in this rising interest rate regime to earn maximum returns. More about floating rate funds can be read at:
http://www.financialexpress.com/printer/news/113055/
http://www.fourstocks.com/blog/200912/analyzing_floating_rate_funds/426
http://valueinvestorindia.blogspot.com/2009/12/analysing-floating-rate-funds.html
Higher returns can be expected from Long term floating rate funds over short term. A snapshot of list of long term floating rate funds is available at:
http://new.valueresearchonline.com/funds/h2_typecomp.asp?type=1&objective=34
An important point to keep in mind is that floating rate funds are good only when you are ready to invest for at least more than 1 year. Otherwise the exit loads on these funds are very big. Examples:
Fund Exit load
==== =======
BSL Floating Rate LT Ret-G 2% for redemption within 365 days
HDFC Floating Rate Income LT-G 3% for redemption within 540 days
ICICI Pru LT Floating Rate A-G 4% for redemption within 390 days
Information about all fund categories in debt is available at:
http://wealth.moneycontrol.com/printpage.php?id=13992
Update: Sunday 14th March 2010
========================
My thoughts proved to be correct as seen from the article at link below which discusses the returns of all debt fund categories in the month of February 2010. The essence is that floating rate long term funds was the best performing category of the month.
